India's elderly population reached approximately 168 million in 2026 and is projected to reach 230 million by 2036 (United Nations World Population Prospects, 2024). A systematic review published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research in July 2026 found that social isolation and loneliness among older Indians are increasing in direct proportion to population ageing driven primarily by the rise of nuclear families and urban migration.
According to the National Statistical Office (NSO, 2021), 20% of urban elderly Indians and 10% of rural elderly live alone. These are not seniors who are visibly struggling they are often functional, capable adults who simply have too few meaningful social interactions across the day.
Over time, this chronic low-level isolation has consequences that are as serious as many physical health conditions.
